About Synergy Communities

The Synergy Communities project investigates methods to make the field of science education more cumulative and cohesive. This project brings together a multi-institutional community of reseachers, developers, and educators to synthesize what we know about supporting student learning in a common subject domain: water quality. The project actively encourages collaborative research and development efforts that span institutional boundaries, with the goal of identifying effective theoretical and curricular approaches to science teaching and learning that may be used in a diverse set of educational contexts.

The Synergy Communities project also explores how teachers customize innovative science curricula to address the needs of their own classrooms. In partnership with researchers at the University of South Carolina, this project will investigate the challenges teachers face as they customize curricula for new educational settings and the ways in which "flexibly adaptive" curricular design and professional development can support the customization process.

Marcia C. Linn is the principal investigator. Alan Li is the project manager. The Synergy Communities project is funded by the National Science Foundation and builds on earlier research conducted by the Center for Innovative Learning Technologies.
